5 Ways to Win at SAPPHIRE

In just a few weeks, over 20,000 people from the SAP community around the world will make their way to Orlando, Florida – not to visit Mickey (though I’m sure some will), but to spend the week at the SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG annual conference, with the hopes of bringing some SAP-magic home with them to improve their SAP operations.

This is the biggest SAP event of the year, and it can be quite overwhelming. With 10 SAPPHIREs under my belt, I thought I’d share some wisdom on how you can get the most out of your time at the conference and go home feeling like a winner.


  1. Pack your bags

The conference is held in the massive Orange County Conference Center and covers the size of approximately 16 football fields! The average attendee walks 70 miles over the span of the week (a good time to get those steps in… if you’re counting), so ignore your fashion sense and put away those stilettos or those brand new rigid oxfords, and opt for something a bit more comfortable. I always like to bring a few different pairs of shoes just to give my feet a break on the second or third day.


  1. Plan your agenda

Now that we’ve covered fashion, let’s get into the real reason we go to SAPPHIRE – to learn. There are around 1700 educational sessions available throughout the week – how do you choose?! It’s important to think about why you’re attending and what you hope to get out of it, and with that in mind take a look at the session catalog and start planning out your days.

Here are a couple of sessions we recommend:

Tuesday | 12:00 pm | Why It’s Critical to Have an RPA Solution for SAP in Your Portfolio

Wednesday | 1:00 pm | Smith & Nephew transforms SAP processes and improves compliance

Wednesday | 3:00 pm | Patterson reduces material fulfillment time by 60% with automated solution

  1. Visit Vendors

In addition to all the sessions available, there are hundreds of partner companies exhibiting on the show floor, all with solutions and services to help improve your SAP operations. Plus, you could walk away a winner! Speaking of cool things – visiting vendors is a great way to collect tchotchkes (Don’t go to the airport giftshop, these are great souvenirs for kids or colleagues back at the office). Anyway, the point is, hundreds of vendors are waiting to meet you at SAPPHIRE. My tip – don’t be afraid to talk to them. Even if you don’t feel like it, you may actually find just the solution you’ve been looking for.


  1. Network

With over 20,000 people at the conference, this is a great chance to connect with people like you who use SAP software every day. Bolster your network, learn new ways of doing things, and don’t forget to bring your business cards!

After three days of keynotes, breakout sessions, demos, buzzwords (digital transformation, intelligent enterprise, accelerate innovation… I could go on – should we make a bingo card?), it’s important to relax and decompress. SAP always puts on a great show, and this year we all get to see LADY GAGA!
