Budgeting in your ERP System

By Bill Wiseman on Jul 20, 2021

A few years back, while working as an analyst in the Consumer Products Industry, I found myself spending a considerable amount of time budgeting and planning.

Each year beginning in July, we would create a new operating plan for the next fiscal year. It was a very iterative process and we continued refining the budget until it was presented in December. In addition, each month after closing the books and posting actuals, we began the process of reforecasting the remaining budget year, quarterly and monthly.

If you have worked in finance with an ERP system, you learn very quickly that there is not a lot of good budgeting and forecasting functionality. A lot of companies choose 3rd party bolt on products or like us many used spreadsheets and manual entry.

Entering budgeting data, by Profit Center, Cost Center, down to the cost element level, spread using varying methods can become very time consuming. Like us and so many other organizations, we would spend days following closing to reallocated expenses across hundreds of profit and cost centers. Between closing, budgeting, and account analysis, we used the better part of the month working through these processes.

As a part of this blog, I will demonstrate the process by which you enter budgeting data in an ERP system using SAP and then using Winshuttle to automate the process. There is no doubt that SAP is by far the best ERP system in the market, and it has extensive capabilities. However, the process by which data is entered becomes extensive and manual.
