Taking the robot out of the human

Last week at SAPPHIRE in Orlando, I had the pleasure of leading an educational session on Robotic Process Automation (RPA). It was an introductory session providing a basic overview on what RPA is and why it is currently such a hot topic. I was a little taken aback by the enormous interest and it was clear that many are either about to start their RPA journey or have already embarked on it.

Analysts define RPA as software that can process structured data and perform rule-based tasks with the goal of automating paths taken through enterprise applications by humans. In other words, RPA automates human key strokes on keyboards in much the same way robotics automate physical movements.

The great advantage of RPA is doing repetitive stuff more quickly, accurately and tirelessly than humans. The last point is important. Humans are not particularly well-suited for repetitive tasks, often making more errors as we increasingly tire of the repetitive tasks at hand.

I had a myriad of follow-up conversations after the session and a couple of key points stood out from those conversations:

  • It is becoming evident that no one generic RPA tool will meet all enterprise needs for desktop automation. Companies are increasingly evaluating special purpose RPA tools for faster ROI.
  • Among the organizations that have started implementing RPA, the most successful are the ones that started by rapidly implementing limited scope pilots to prove the ROI and effectiveness before scaling up.

Many enterprise applications impose a significant manual and repetitive workload on humans and many of these applications will be around for a long time. RPA is a way to take the robot out of the human and increase your readiness for the digital enterprise through faster and more accurate process execution.
